Methodology
How DupeOne evaluates alternatives
DupeOne is a human-verified perfume dupe search engine. Every recommendation is built from structured fragrance data, cited evidence, and editorial review — never from a single opinion or an automated guess.
How we read similarity
A similarity score reflects how closely an alternative matches an original across its scent profile — shared notes and accords, and the way each fragrance opens and dries down. We group scores into plain bands so the number is never read in isolation:
- Near-identical — the closest matches.
- Very close — strongly comparable with minor differences.
- Similar vibe — the same general direction.
- Loosely inspired — related but noticeably different.
Confidence bands
A similarity score is always shown together with a confidence band, which reflects how much evidence supports the match. Confidence ranges from High down to Needs more evidence. When confidence is too low, we hold back the score rather than imply more certainty than we have. We never display a similarity score without a confidence band.
Evidence standards
Each reviewed match links to evidence: editorial reviews, community discussion, retailer and brand facts, and our own testing notes. We summarise sources in our own words, prefer independent and recent sources, and record where each claim comes from so it can be checked or challenged.
Editorial review
Reviewed pages carry a written editorial verdict that covers opening, drydown, performance, and value where relevant. Verdicts are produced by human editors and stamped with a review date. We do not publish ranked collections until each pick has been reviewed this way.
Independence from commerce
DupeOne may earn a commission when readers use merchant links, but commissions never change a similarity, confidence, or value score, and never change ranking order. Scoring and monetisation are kept strictly separate. See our affiliate disclosure for details.
Indexing and quality gates
Pages stay set to noindex until they pass a quality gate that checks for sufficient evidence, a live offer, an editorial verdict, computable scores with a confidence band, and genuine page-specific content. This keeps thin or unfinished pages out of search until they are actually useful.
How we describe comparisons
We describe fragrances by their scent profile and by how users compare them. We do not claim that one fragrance is identical to another, and we keep wording factual and comparison-based. Brand names are used only to state facts and comparisons, never to imply endorsement.
